Southern Marmara Region meeting of Marmara Municipalities Association Environment Platform, covering the cities of Bursa, Balikesir, Canakkale and Yalova, took place at Ataturk Congress Cultural Center with the hosting of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality. Meeting agenda was related with environment.
Meeting being held in Bursa, to which representatives of 67 municipalities attended, started with the opening speech of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality General Secretary Ismail Yilmaz. By mentioning about the environment vision of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, Yilmaz told about the works being done with the aim to improve environment quality of the city. Yilmaz gave information about works being carried out for renewing drinking water pipelines to reduce leakages, passing to separated system and establishment of waste water treatment plants, regaining energy and raw materials from wastes by realizing waste minimization and by passing to integrated waste management, inspecting excavation and construction wastes and creating appropriate storage areas, avoiding discharging of domestic and industrial wastes into water sources and improving water quality of Nilufer brook, increasing amount of green areas per person, rehabilitating irregular storage areas and transforming them into green areas.
At the meeting, responsibilities of municipalities and authorized institutions regarding the implementation of ‘Regulation for the Control of Packaging Wastes’ which is newly amended by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and common solutions being created with the sharing of expertise attained by district municipalities in the area of environmental management have been evaluated. At the meeting where there was opinion exchange about the implementations in different cities relating with solid waste tariffs, information was also provided by Marmara Municipalities Association Trainer Umit Arslan, regarding the subject of ‘Employing personnel for the cleaning works’ within the scope of Statutory Decree with no 696.
At the meeting it is stated that Marmara Municipalities Association is the coordinating institution within the context of EU Presidents Contract and that they will provide support to local administrations in that respect and the importance of international collaboration is emphasized. It is stated that the meeting, which is helpful for improving the communication among municipalities and for providing common solutions to different problems, shall be organized again at specific intervals within the year and it is also mentioned that in that respect it has been recommended for Bursa Metropolitan Municipality to undertake the role of coordination with the mediation of Environment Protection and Control Department Presidency.
